Benefits of Scheme Membership

Despite test results informing critical decisions around the safety of flooring, decisions that could easily lead to accidents and associated legal action, it is often difficult to demonstrate competency.  The POP Scheme aims to provide members with the means to set themselves apart as a high-quality service.  It signals to those relying on your work that they can have higher confidence in your testing ability.

Pendulum testers for suppliers, manufactures, or quality assurance

Validate results produced and increase confidence by measuring performance against the same external accredited labs who certify  products.

Pendulum testers for risk assesment

Gain trust and promote your testing by demonstrating both understanding of, and willingness to comply with, the UKSRG Guidelines, industry best practice for slip risk assessment.

Pendulum testers in associated industries

Cleaning, anti-slip or flooring contractors benefit from having a certified operator whose performance has been independently benchmarked.

Pendulum testers providing expert witness evidence

Being able to demonstrate membership of a competency scheme provides another reason, in addition to the typical expert's resumé, for the Court to trust contended results.

Scheme members are able to use the POP Scheme logo on their test reports and marketing material.

Membership Criteria

The scheme is not a pay-for-entry arrangement, only competent operators capable of demonstrating they meet the following criteria are eligible for scheme membership.

Equipment Audit

Applicants must provide evidence they have access to all items required by the UKSRG Guidelines (Clause 2.1 - Slip resistance equipment).  Equipment will be evidenced by submission of calibration certificates, standard materials certificates, or photographs of ancillary equipment, for review.

Non-UKAS calibration certification is acceptable.  A roughness meter is not considered essential.

Practical Assessment

Applicants must test 2 surfaces in a single direction with both hard and soft sliders.  The reported result of each test will be considered acceptable if it falls within the range produced by (at least 4) UKAS accredited laboratories testing the same surface.  Generally an acceptable variation will be +/-2PTV of the mean result, but a wider range will be applicable where the accredited labs produced a wider range, for example on smooth dry surfaces and/or with the soft slider.  Tests should be conducted in accordance with the Guidelines, including verification and slider preparation/refacing, with all results reported.

The specific pass/fail criteria for this and all audits will be communicated prior to assessment, but testing will be blind ie. target values will not be revealed.

Procedural Knowledge

Applicants must score 90% or higher on a 20 question, untimed, open book, multiple choice exam.  The exam questions are focussed entirely on the UKSRG Guidelines and are answerable by anyone with access to, and a sound understanding of, the Guidelines.  A copy of the Guidelines will be essential.

A copy of the UKSRG Guidelines is availlable from the UKSRG

Operator Declaration

All scheme members must agree to act professionally, impartially, and competently when undertaking pendulum slip resistance testing.  In addition, when claiming testing undertaken in accordance with the UKSRG Guidelines, scheme members must agree to:
  • Apply the current issue of the UKSRG Guidelines, in force at the time of testing, following the relevant procedures and good practice set out therein.
  • Use suitable, appropriate and verified equipment, including sliders and accessories, in accordance with the requirements of the UKSRG Guidelines.
  • Record and report results accurately and transparently, including relevant test conditions, any deviations from standard procedures, and any limitations that may affect interpretation.
Further conditions apply to the use of the POP Scheme logo on reports and marketing material.

The full terms and conditions of scheme membership are provided on application.

Operator Training

The POP Scheme is not suitable for those without a solid understanding of the Pendulum device and its operation to UKSRG Guidelines.  The scheme is a test of competence, not a training package.  It is highly recommended that new or less experienced Pendulum operators undertake a training session prior to application.  Reputable training sessions are available from UKSRG members.  Some training sessions may include discounted scheme application.

Like the idea of higher quality testing?

If you're providing excellent testing and think that should be the norm, then please help us promote the POP Scheme.
Letting potential clients know that you're a scheme member, what the scheme is, and how it drives higher quality testing, sets you apart from less committed competitors and helps risk managers make better choices when sourcing testing services.
As a voluntary scheme we rely on the support of both excellent testers and conscientious risk managers to grow membership and drive better testing standards.  We'd be thrilled if you made both potential and existing clients aware of the scheme and its benefits.
